Abstract
We have tried to interpret the distribution of the prohibitive in the Chūbu Area dialect in Japan by using the geographical dialect method. This paper is divided into three parts; the first section is a descriptive study of the varieties of the dialect, that is, Minamikasuya, Chita-city and Aichi prefeaure of the Chūbu Area. In the second section, we have considered the distribution and the historical distribution will extend to the western part of the Chūbu Area. 2. ikan exists in the eastern part of the Chūbu Area and surrounds akan, which is found in Kinki, Hokuriku, and the western half of the Chūbu Area, in an excircling formation. 3. In the area where both akan and ikan are used, four functions can be recognized. For example, akan leads a weaker subordinated clause of causation than ikan. 4. Both ikan and oen are found in the eastern and western regions of Japan, displaying the encircling formation. 5. dachikan derives from rachi-akan. Nowadays that expression has become a characteristic of the dialects in the- Chūbu Area in Japan. Thus the prohibitive exibits many forms in the Chūbu Area, and their distributions overlap and interact with each other.
