A Study on the Reformation of gymnastices in Physical Education by Toichiro Hata at the Seijo Elementary School from 1928 to 1933

This study aims to clarify the feature of the idea that Toichiro Hata (1906-1999) planed and shaped about the reforming gymnastics in physical education classes at the Seijo elementary school. Especially this study deals with the documents that Hata wrote from 1928 to 1933 as a schoolteacher at the Seijo elementary school. Futhermore this study focuses on clarifying the extent to which the books of Kikuo Mihashi (1888-1969) influenced Toichiro Hata. The results as follws : Hata set up the 'Sogo Undo (Combined Exercises)' as one of the groups of exercises in the table of gymnastics lessons that he published in 1930. Hata introduced the 'Sogo Undo' and his four viewpoints of reforming gymnastics in accordance with characteristics of the gymnastics in 'The Systematic Critique on Syllabus of physical training for schools (1926)' published by Kikuo Mihashi et al. in 1926. In the table of gymnastics lessons that Hata published in 1930, he introduced many of exercises from 'Modern School Gymnastics' published by Kikuo Mihashi in 1925. Hata was a pioneer in the introduction of rhythmical exercises and continuous exercises as teaching material to gymnastics at the Seijo elementary school.
