Abstract
Southern Africa is the region worst affected by HIV/AIDS in the world, and there have been multi-sectored projects to contain the epidemic. Steps for the future, an HIV/AIDS film project, is unique in that it produces and distributes films concerning individuals, families, communities facing HIV/AIDS in the region. The present paper discusses one of the Steps films, Looking for Busi, a South-Africa documentary film about an HIV-positive teenage girl coming to terms with herself. Part 1 considers application of arts in HIV/AIDS campaigns. While what are called campaign arts are didactic enough to present a series of solutions to the HIV/AIDS problem, the Steps films, and Looking for Busi in paticular, avoid solving contradictions in their HIV-inflicted society and represent the contradictions as such. Part 2 analyzes how Looking for Busi deals with social contradictions. First, it clarifies power relations represented in the film in terms of kinship structure, class and gender. Then, it discusses how the fils, by failing as a Bildungsroman, demonstrates the impossibility of pprescribing a set of solutions to social contradictions.
