Abstract |
Rapid economic growth in Asian countries has contributed toward substantial increase in CO2emissions. Japanalso had experience of rapid economic growth. However, Japan's rapid economic growth from 1974 to 1983 did notincrease substantial amount of CO2emissions in the manufacturing sector. In this paper, We analyze the factors contributing toward controlled CO2emissions during this period of Japan'srapid economic growth and describe the possibilities to reduce CO2emissions in Asian countries.We start this paper with a focus on Japan's experience. Analyses have been conducted by using models in manu-facturing and electricity sectors. In Japan's case, main factor was energy-saving technology in both the sectors.However the potential of technology has almost been vanished during recent years.Then the structure of CO2emissions in Asian countries are explained. Some countries lost effectiveness of ener-gy-saving technology in manufacturing sector due to rapid economic growth and expansion of manufacturing sec-tor. Moreover, in electricity sector, most countries are straggling to reduce CO2emissions especially in recent years.Finally, We show the effectiveness of technology transfer in electricity sector and necessity of CDM (CleanDevelopment Mechanism) to check CO2emissions in Asian countries.
