This study analyzes the development of shopping malls and the entry of foreign retailers into Indian markets, focusing on the Delhi National Capital Region (NCR). During the second half of the 1990s, small- and medium-sized malls were developed on the outskirts of the Delhi NCR, such as Gurgaon and Noida. In the 2000s, an increasing number of shopping malls spread throughout the Delhi NCR. In the second half of the 2000s, large-scale shopping malls developed in Saket and Vasant Kunj. In Saket, for example, there is a complex of three big shopping malls. Other huge shopping malls include the Ambience mall at Gurgaon and Great Indian Places at Noida. Ambience mall is the largest shopping mall in India, with a floor area of more than 80,000 square meters. The catchment areas of such big malls are extensive in the Delhi NCR. Most shopping malls in India were constructed by Indian developers during the period of the estate boom beginning in the 1990s. Many foreign retailers have established shops in these large malls, where they sell fashion brands, electronics, and other items. The items sold by these foreign retailers have rapidly infiltrated the Indian market, especially during the 2000s. In this way, shopping malls have supplied tenant spaces for foreign retailers, while offering attractive shopping places for rich Indians.
