Abstract
This paper explores the mapping rules between syntax and prosody in Russian in a framework of the autosegmantal-metrical theory. The pitch accents L*+H* in an intonation phrase are compared between the left and right branching structures. The results demonstrate that the amount of the F0 rise of L*+H* is significantly greater if the L*+H* is located before the left branching boundary, suggesting that the left branching structure is marked in Russian. The results are interpreted by hypothesizing an intermediate phrase between the intonation phrase and the prosodic word: the left branching boundary is mapped onto the intermediate phrase boundary in Russian, affecting the manifestation of the pitch accent.
