Abstract
Psychological studies on recognition of Kanji were reviewed. They were divided into three groups according to the areas concerned: (1) those in experimental psychology, (2) those in developmental psychology, and (3) those in educational psychology. The first group was treated most fully, by subdividing them into four according to the theme investigated: (1) measurement of Kanji attributes, (2) graphemic, phonetic, and semantic processing of Kanji, (3) On (Chinese type reading) and Kun (Japanese type reading) readings, and (4) the function of grahemic elements of Kanji. The problems of studies in each of the three areas, and of the overall Kanji studies were discussed.
