Abstract
This research note reports on selected preliminary results of the 2022 Survey of Students' Perceptions of Peace, conducted jointly by Yomiuri Shimbun and the Center for Peace at Hiroshima University between mid-April to mid-July 2022, on the 77th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The survey investigated first-year students' general knowledge of the nuclear attacks against Hiroshima and Nagasaki more than seven decades ago and their perceptions of world peace in the current geopolitical climate, particularly concerning the Russo-Ukrainian conflict. Eight universities across Japan, from Hokkaido to Okinawa, participated in this survey. The results indicated double standards in the students' perceptions of peace concerning the abolition of nuclear weapons, torn between the ideal nuclear-free status and the perceived real-world threats.
