Abstract
In this essay I’m going to present a pottery sherd which is believed to have been unearthed from the Nishiyama shell midden in Hiroshima city. It has not been yet reported and will be examined concerning its characteristics by comparing it with other similar cases. The sherd belongs to a jar-shaped type of pottery with a narrow neck and a very thin and firm finishing. Regarding the Aki region it has an exceptional design, it is therefore considered to have been imported from other regions. Examples are mainly observed in the coastal areas of the Seto Inland Sea, and many of them are considered to have a lineage that can be traced back to the Kibi region. Due to the fact that in the Aki region Kibi-type pottery artifacts are rarely unearthed, they are considered to be valuable material revealing interregional exchange in the second half of the Late Yayoi period. The Nishiyama shell midden is occupied important position in the bay coast of Hiroshima in terms of the location and quantity of objects, and the material presented here is considered to reinforce such characteristics.
