Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to analyze a conversation of four Japanese women and examine the multimodal narration with iconic gestures in which they physically re-enact the narrated activity. The analysis shows that these gestures set up an imaginary stage for the re-enactment in their current conversation space, stimulate a recipient to co-act with the narrator, and help her physically experience what the narrator wants to tell. Based on these findings, the utterances and gestures were confirmed to independently express different parts of the same narrated event, indicating that the gestures’ potency in conversation should be reconsidered based on the fact that gestures are always observable and entrusted to all recipients, facilitating a variety of forms of active cooperation.
