Abstract
The aim of this paper is to clarify Japanese expressions used in daily greetings, in the contrastive analysis of expressions used in daily greetings in Japanese, modern Greek, English and Chinese. In this analysis some characteristics have become clear. One of the general characteristics displayed in the greetings is structural ellipsis. The other characteristics of Japanese greetings are, as I named, "ellipsis of important words(phrases)", "the behaviour of the objective statement", "the modifying of expressions to suit a situation", "self-restraint in expressions" and "expressions to suit the respective statuses of the speakers". In modern Greek, English and Chinese, there are also some interesting characteristics. For instance, in modern Greek plain and respective expressions are in the opposite relation. In modern Greek and English there is the scope to express important words and to express one's opinion and Chinese has somehow the same tendency as modern Greek, etc.
