Abstract
In this paper, I considered how to deal with the Confucius's discourse in 『孟子(Mengzi)』 and 『荀子(Xunzi)』 from a viewpoint of narrative form.

『孟子』 only quotes the Confucius's speaking. It means that 『孟子』 regarded the Confucius's voice and his real existence as important.

However 『荀子』 not only quotes the Confucius's speaking, but also let Confucius narrate freely by useing of direct discourse. Indeed 『荀子』 also regarded that the Confucius's voice and its real existence as important, but 『荀子』 is characterized by this narration, as a new function of the Confucius.

Based on this study we have to change the point of view of Confucius research from "Who is Confucius" to "What is Confucius."

And we must understand Confucius how to narrate, and what is his function of the narrator in 先秦諸子 (xian qin zhu zi) text.
