Abstract
In this paper I dealt with the problem of how the Pāṇinīyas evaluated the analytical and synthetic methods in the derivational system of the Aṣṭādhyāyī.

The Pāninīyas distinguish between the performance of a language and the theory of it. In actual usage, language is far from being hierarchical (base-affix/word/sentence) ; only through mentel construction (kalpanā) can it be viewed in terms of a construct (samudāya). The methods involved in the Aṣṭādhyāyī's derivational system indicate that linguistic units must be posited to explain the real data of communication, that is, indivisible sentences.
