Abstract
Japanese poetry contest held by Yozei, the Retired Emperor, in which his two Princes participated, was held in early tenth century. This is the private poetry contests held by Yozei in which mainly his family and vassals participated. Like ‘‘Regrets about autumn,’’ the Japanese poetry contest held by Yozei, the Retired Emperor, expressions of poetry from the preceding period around Kokin Wakashu can also be seen in this, which was probably the requirement for this poetry contest. This study will explain these characteristics by examining the nature of this poetry contest.
