Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to discuss Japanese and English expressions used for clarification requests. I collected examples of such Japanese expressions in daily life and analyzed each instance. This paper reveals the kinds of expressions that are frequently used and includes several differences in expressions used for clarification requests between Japanese and English. Several suggestions are also given for practical ways to catch important messages when listening to a foreign language.
