Abstract
The objective of this study is to reevaluate the Tsukizaki-kasō type pottery of the Early Jomon period, which has been recognized as a pottery style with a certain duration of existence through excavations. In order to reevaluate the Tsukizaki-kasō pottery, we first analyzed pottery excavated from the Tsukizaki site in Ube City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, which is in the possession of the Hiroshima University Department of Archaeology, and extracted groups based on multiple aspects of analysis. Then, based on the Tsukizaki-kasō type pottery excavated in the San’in region and the western part of the Seto Inland Sea, which has a known concurrent relationship with other types, and the chronology of the excavated layers, we confirmed what the extracted differences indicated.
As a result, it was confirmed that the Tsukizaki-kasō type pottery was a type that lasted longer than previously thought. It was also concluded that it was a pottery type associated with different lineages and may have existed as a border area pottery type, influenced by the pottery styles of the Kinki and Kyūshū regions.
