This paper provides a critical review of the formal/informal sector debate in recent studies of the urban employment in the Third World. The uses of the informal sector concept by four scholars are discussed, and a great lack of clarity in definition and arbitrariness of classification are stressed. An alternative more satisfactory model is presented, based on the distinction between the bazaar economy and the xlum which are confused in the informal sector.
