In this study the determinants of the direction of Japanese Technical Assistance and Grant Aid programs extended in 1983 are examined in relation to various socio-economic indicators of each recipient country as well as the relationship between those countries and Japan, i.e., 1) population, 2) income, 3) GDP, 4) Japanese investment, 5) trade with Japan, 6) the number of Japanese residents, and 7) the number of Japanese immigrants. The findings of the study are as follows: 1) Grant Aid programs have certain correlation with the population of a recipient country, and also with the income of a recipient country (negative correlation). 2) Technical Assistance programs have correlation with the recipients' population, GDP, Japanese investment, trade, the number of Japanese residents and immigrants. Among them the number of Japanese residents in each recipient country has a strong correlation with the amount of Japanese Technical Assistance programs directed to the said country. While there is no relationship between the income level of recipient countries and the amount of Japanese Technical Assistance programs. 3) These results reveal that while Japanese Grant Aid programs are distributed among the developing countries in some consideration of their income level, on the other hand, Technical Assistance programs have been carried out in the countries where close relationship with Japan can be found, but they are independent of the income level of the recipients.
