The present study was designed to examine the effects of diagram use on word problem solving processes. As the teaching method of the diagram, three groups were established.The one is the group which writes in words and a number at tape daiagrams (blank space group). The second is the group drawing a tape daiagram in order of a sentence (order group). The third is the group to draw a tape daiagram from the biggest number (biggest number group). It was suggested in the experiment that children who were high-ability for word problem solving in the biggest number group were good performance. These results were discussed in terms of the acquisition of the learning stratagey.
