The word “plum” is included in an anthology of Japanese poetry, the oldest of which is the Kaifusou. During the early Heian period, writing about plants was becoming more common, such as Lingyunshu, Wenhuashurishu, and Keikokushu. In the Kamakura and Muromachi periods, monks of Gozan, who played a central role in the literary activities of the time, also tried to write poetry about plants. Then came the heyday of Japanese kanshi in the Edo period. The number of plant poems is very large, and rich expressions are displayed. Nihon Eibutsushi is the first anthology of plant and animal poems. In Nihon Eibutsushi, the sakura (cherry blossom) poems appear before the plum poems. This article exhibits a lot of Japanese kanshi about flowers in Umeoka Eibutsushi and Nihon Eibutsushi. It may be observed that, at the end of the Edo period, poems about flowers had begun to change from a Chinese to a Japanese style.
