abstract
This paper examines the change of time spent on unpaid work and paid work by dual-income couples and non dual-income couples. Analyses in this paper are based on data of 1991, 1996 and 2001 Survey on Time Use and Leisure Activities conducted by Statistics Bureau, Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications, Japan. Unpaid work includes cooking, cleaning, laundry, caring for adults, household chore, child care, shopping and voluntary work. The change or immutability was analyzed mainly from the viewpoint of family type of household. Time devoted to paid work of husbands has decreased and time devoted to unpaid work of them has increased in this decade. However, compared with reduction of paid work, increment of unpaid work was small. It has not changed that time spent on unpaid work by husbands in non dual-income family is longer than that by husbands in dual-income family. Though the effect of living with parents of couple is not consistent in case of wives in dual-income family, it is consistent in case of wives in non dual-income family. Time devoted to unpaid work by wives, living with parents in non dual- income family is consistently longer than wives, not living with parents in this decade.
