abstract | Childcare for disabled children in Japan has experienced several trends, such as establishing isolated education, integrated education, special needs education, and inclusive education systems. While the inclusive education system is currently being promoted, it is important to describe various problems experienced by disabled children in the past. This study found that play nurtures the child’s subjectivity; thus, free interaction between children is important. Following a review of the literature, the childcare process for handicapped children to date in Japan and why play and free interaction are important for all children, including those with disabilities.
