abstract | This paper is intended as an investigation of śabdasvarūpa which means 'word itself' of 'word's own form' in Indian Grammar(vyākaraṇa). We have the rule P 1.1.68 svaṁ rūpaṁ śabdasyāśabdasaṁjñā //. The material in this paper is drawn mainly from Patañjali's Vyākaraṇa — Mahābhāṣya on the sūtra which has three main topics as follows.
(1) The purpose of the word 'rūpam' in the rule. (2) The need of this rule. (3) The cases which require special anubandhas to refer to the synonyms (paryāya) and the variety (viśesa). |
