abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine how Korean national Kendo athletes perceive Kendo compared with how Korean university Kendo players perceive it. The subjects of this study were 100 Korean university Kendo players all of whom are male and whose average age is 22.0±2.03 years old and 11 Korean national Kendo athletes all of whom are also male and whose average age is 28.5±3.04 years old. According to many previous studies, the more an athlete has experience of kendo, the more he perceives it as a martial art rather than as a sport and the more positive is his attitude in general to Kendo. As a research method, I used a research methodology developed by the national educational federation of Japan in 1993. The result of my research displays a significant difference between Korean national Kendo athletes and Korean university Kendo players. In particular, it shows that Korean national Kendo athletes perceive Kendo as a sport and that they show a higher degree of interest in Kendo and a more positive attitude to it than compared with Korean university Kendo players.
