abstract | Today, over 30 thousand children live in 575 childcare institutions in japan. The recent trend is to build small size group homes as branches to provide individualized care. Successful group homes are commonly rooted in the community. In some cases existing resources such as a group home for the handicapped or key persons in the community were utilized. In another case, multiple group homes were placed within the same school district with the base institution so that staff and children stay in a familiar environment.
