Propagating flames in vortex rings of hydrogen/air mixtures have been experimentally investigated. The flame speed has been measured by a high speed video camera, and the maximum tangential velocity in the vortex ring has been estimated from the hot-wire measurements on the cold-air vortex rings. Observations show very complex ignition processes, and the obtained relations between the flame speed and the maximum tangential velocity elucidate the validity of the recently developed theory, though only for very lean mixtures. With an increase in equivalence ratio, their relation approaches the one predicted by the classical vortex bursting theory. A requirement for precise measurement on the maximum tangential velocity is especially noted for further specifying the mechanism (s) of the flame propagation.
