'Objects of Comparison' as an Alternative Model in Studies in English Language Education

abstract | This paper presents a 'pragmatic explanation by objects of comparison' as an alternative to a 'scientific explanation by deductive-nomological model.' While the scientific explanation is epitomized by Chomsky, the proposed 'pragmatic explanation by objects of comparison' is a product of philosophical reflection on 'scientism' and 'essence' by Hayek and Wittgenstein respectively. The paper argues that the pragmatic explanation by objects of comparison has its own role: it shows similarities and dissimilarities at the same time, giving us a clear view, free from a preconceived idea of 'what must be the case', which is inherent in the scientific explanation.
