Abstract
The purpose of this study is to review study trends on sand play among young children in Korea and to compare these trends with the results and the problems observed in Korea and Japan. We collected Korean precedent studies and classified them into nine categories, as follows: (1) The meaning of sand play for young children. (2) The characteristics of sand play among young children. (3) The changes observed in young children with special needs after engaging in sand play. (4) The relationship between age and sex differences and sand play for young children. (5) The changes in the actions of parents and their children brought on by sand play. (6) The influence of water and toys on sand play. (7) The influence of sand play on Integrated Education and Child Care. (8) The influence that sand play has on the emotional development of young children. (9) The different types of sand play engaged in by young children.

As a result, we identified two points of similarity in the studies of Korea and Japan. First, both Korean and Japanese studies clarify the meaning of sand play for young children and the relationship between children's ages and their involvement in sand play. Second, studies about sand boxes are now being developed in Korea, whereas historical studies of sand play have traditionally been developed in Japan.
