Abstract
In this essay I will analyze the interrelation between literary text and discourse in Tsuretsuregusa so as to make explicit the mode of "public" order in Middle Ages Japan. In this period so many independent communities were formed that diverse discourses coexisted in one nation, and they communicated and mixed up with one another. At the same time, the dominance of the aristocratic order was supplanted by that of the religious one, which in turn came to represent the nation's self-identification and maintain its imaginary unity on the level of discourse. But in the polyphonic world where any kind of unified discourse was challenged, even this supposed order, as will be seen, was becoming relativized.
