| Abstract |
It is already known that the sign "〱", standing for the repetition of a certain Japanese alphabet (kana), is derived from the Chinese "善々哉々". The present study has revealed a couple of additional facts about the development of the sign.
First, the starting-point of the sign "〱" was immediately at the right of the first kana, during the Heian period. After the Kamakura period, it gradually shifted downward and became what it is nowadays in the Muromachi period. This change took place in parallel with that of the times. Secondly, the transition of the starting-point is attributed to the economy of labour on the part of a. writer. |
